The Nazi Invaders of Mykonos
We toured the island of Mykonos with our guide, Pavlos. We visited a revered light house built in 1890 - a boat had crashed below in 1880 because of thick fog, so the light house was finally built a decade later.
While driving along the coast, we learned why all the walls between the properties are made up of piled up stones. Anything else will be blown down. Greece is always sunny, but it has super strong winds.
During the tour, Pavlos shared many stories, some we may not have known otherwise.
The most memorable was this one about World War II:
In 1943, four Nazi soldiers invaded Mykonos. The mayor had the four of them arrested and incarcerated.
The mayor did not let them go until the war ended in 1945.
Many years later, a man called a Mykonos government office to inquire about who had been the mayor of the town in 1943 - he was given that man’s information.
The man then reached out and contacted the mayor.
He told him who he was, and then thanked him for his life. He went on to explain that he had been one of the four Nazi soldiers who were jailed until the war’s end.
He told the mayor that had he not incarcerated the 4 of them, he would have been sent to the front lines, and he would have surely lost his life.
And he thanked him profusely.
The two men remained good friends for life.

The next day we headed out on our own to a different beach area, Ornos, and it was just beautiful … although you could feel the fish taking little bites. Especially Patty, they loved her.
That evening we went to a beautiful club that Teresa had found for us by watching TikTok videos!
It was gorgeous!
The next morning, we were off on a ferry to Santorini! ☀️
